Central sink Moutere's ambitions [Marlborough Express]

Biddy Kates Central and Crafar Crouch Waitohi will play off for round-one honours at Lansdowne Park this weekend after retaining their unbeaten records in the Marlborough premier club rugby competition with bonus-point victories on Saturday afternoon. At Awarua Park in Spring Creek, competition leaders Central picked up maximum points for the fourth time in as many matches as they dispatched third-placed Moutere 38-14. The victory came on the back of a 28-0 first half when they capitalised on a strong breeze and ill-discipline from the Magpies to score four converted tries. As expected, Waitohi proved too strong for Awatere in Picton, securing a 36-3 win. Waitohi had an 19-point advantage at the break and although the Tussock Jumpers put in a much improved all-round effort, the home team eventually secured their bonus point when loosie Vernon Fredericks dotted down twice in the final five minutes. Elsewhere, BNZ Partners Harlequins got their first victory of the season when they overcame a still winless Renwick 23-13 at the Renwick Domain.

Flexman: Tasman Union has good 2012 [Nelson Mail]

Despite announcing a net deficit, the Tasman Rugby Union presented a stronger than expected financial result and a generally positive outlook at its annual general meeting in Blenheim last night.

The financial report displayed a net deficit for 2012 of $35,455 and although that was down on a net surplus of $55,855 in 2011, the board had budgeted for a deficit. Tasman chief executive Andrew Flexman called it a "better than budgeted result", possibly as a result of a measured financial approach and an ability to generate a good level of commercial income.

Talented young pivot targets Makos recall [Marlborough Express]

Daniel Hawkins is a man on a mission, a two-fold rugby mission for club and province. Still just 21 years old, the highly skilled first-five has made a brilliant start to the Marlborough club rugby season, playing major roles in Waitohi's two convincing wins as they chase a rare threepeat of premierships. He has had a taste of NPC rugby, having made his debut for the Tasman Makos in 2010, but last season failed to make the cut and is determined to make it back into the side for 2013.
