CEO Chat with Tony Lewis

This year the TRU with the NZR has introduced the Blue Card Concussion Procedure in Community Rugby, to ensure players that sustain a concussion receive sufficient medical treatment before returning to rugby. We realise that for this procedure to be credible, the support of all health care providers across our region is vital. This procedure was implemented from March 2017 to all grades from 1st XV and above.

Senior Competition Reviews

Harlequins, without a win up until the weekend, defeated Kahurangi 28-17 at Lansdowne Park to be the only Marlborough club to record a win in the NPD Tasman Trophy.

1st XV rugby

Nelson College opened their 2017 UC Championship campaign with their first defence of the year of the Moascar Cup. NZ’s oldest and most prestigious school’s 1st XV trophy. Despite playing with 14 mem for much of the second half, Nelson overcame Christ’s College 22 – 21 on the back of some courageous defence.

Last Wednesday week in Blenheim the TRU started the first of a series of meetings with the stakeholders of Marlborough rugby (including Club Chairman and delegates, Coaches, Players, Life Members, Maori Rugby and JAB representatives) to review of all aspects of rugby in the region. The objective of the review is to look at the current situation and to discuss potential areas for improvement.

Fifteen-year-old Anton Segner hails from a country steeped in football, Germany. While he grew up playing football and ice hockey, it's been rugby that's dominated his sporting endeavours for the past four years. And now he's in New Zealand "living the dream".

Statement from TRU & the Moody Family on Bevan Moody

Tasman Rugby Union (TRU) is deeply saddened by a non-contact incident in the Nelson vs. Waitohi Tasman Trophy match on Saturday 20 May. Bevan has been in an induced coma in Nelson Hospital since Saturday evening. He suffered cardiac arrest in the second half of the match on the field and stopped breathing. He was treated by a medical team for around 30 minutes and was then transferred to Nelson Hospital.

Tasman Rugby is expressing its deep condolence to the Moody family following the death of Waitohi Club player Bevan Moody. Bevan, 22, passed away this morning, Thursday 25 May, at Nelson Hospital surrounded by his partner, daughter and parents after suffering a cardiac arrest while playing in a senior grade rugby match at Neale on Saturday, May 20.

The latest round of NPD Tasman Trophy division one rugby was overshadowed by the on-field, cardiac arrest of Waitohi prop Bevan Moody in his side's match against Nelson at Neale Park on Saturday.

1st XV Rugby

Waimea Combined Schools were convincing in their 33-10 UC Championship secondary schools rugby win over Burnside High School in Christchurch. Marlborough Boys College enjoyed a bonus point win over Shirley Boys HS. Nelson College had the bye.

Meet our staff

Nevin Price is our performance analyst, working with the high performance team during the Club season and then during the Tasman Makos campaign. He’s also our internal technology wizard which makes him rather useful. As an Irish-born Kiwi he’s staying remarkably neutral with regard to the upcoming Lions tour.

Nelson, Waimea Old Boys, Wanderers and Moutere will contest tonight's NPD Tasman Trophy playoffs. Both matches will kick-off at 7pm Wednesday 31 May.

The month of May is the most exciting time for Tasman rugby having spent the last two months preparing for the first week of JAB and Age group rugby. On Saturday’s I can hear the sounds of early morning rugby (referee whistles and parental support) from my house near Neale Park. I watch some games with my daughter as a number of our staff have young children playing.

Waimea Combined Schools have caused a local derby boil over with their comprehensive defeat of Nelson College 1st XV on Saturday.

Meet our staff

Jimmy Holden is our Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for both the Crusaders Academy based in Nelson, and for the Tasman Makos. He comes to us from the Taniwha team up north and is fitting in nicely down at the gym and around the office.
