This Saturday, May 5 is the start of every JAB and Age Grade rugby player’s dream - the 2018 Rugby Season kicks off. Every young girl and boy will go to bed on Friday night wanting it to be the morning. I can remember many years ago going to Kettle Park in Dunedin as an eight year to learn the basic skills of rugby - catch & pass, tackle, serve & step and team work. We practiced those skills till they became second nature and played many different small sided games. It was great foundation for all the young children who attended. I remember it like yesterday.
Mini-Mako makeover for Juniors
This year we have made some fundamental changes to the game of rugby for our young players which we have unashamedly branded around the Mako. We have developed the Mako 5, which are five key fundamental skills. Each age group has been branded around a species of shark, even on the ball they use. The biggest fundamental change is that we have developed a coaching plan for every session of the season. Our magnificent group of volunteer coaches can go the TRU app or the website (see resources section of this newsletter) and each session is clearly defined and laid out.

I wish all the players, coaches and club volunteers a great start to the season. Remember the game is for the young players to enjoy and express themselves, without the pressures of adults living their own dreams vicariously through their kids.
