The aftermath of the horrific events in Christchurch last Friday made club rugby a sombre occasion. I congratulate all the clubs, players, coaches and referees who acknowledged, prayed for and grieved with our Muslim brothers and sisters in this time of absolute shock with a moments silence before all Tasman Trophy matches. Rugby in the top of the south is an inclusive sport for all people who live in our region.
The early start to the 2019 rugby season was not evident in the performances of all teams. After 40 minutes all games were very tight, and the matches were in the balance. Unfortunately for those teams who lost it's my belief, having watched all the matches on our portal, that general fitness was a major issue.
It is something that I have challenged James Holden, our Strength & Conditioning coach, on how can we assist the clubs to increase the fitness levels of the premier club player - to be basically bigger, faster, stronger and aerobically more capable. I look forward to reporting back here.
Last week was the first round that we had E'stel Water on board as the naming sponsor of the 2019 Tasman Trophy. I personally thank them for their support of the premier rugby competition in the region. I can attest to the quality and great taste of their product and encourage all stakeholders to support this local brand.
This year we have a number of health living initiatives with the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, delivering a message around drinking water as the healthy alternative to sugar-based drinks. This message is being delivered by our Rugby Development Officers who are currently in the schools. We have taken it a step further for all Mako matches where children 12 and Under will not be sold "fizz" (unless their parents insist).
Finally. with the Super Rugby season underway it's fantastic to watch our players perform for their franchises. Last week Ryan Coxon made his debut for the Chiefs which was a special moment for him, his family and us as a Union.
The other interesting aspect has been watching last year's coaches perform, Leon MacDonald as Head Coach of the Blues; and Andrew Goodman (Crusaders) and Clarke Dermody (Highlanders) in their roles as assistant coaches. We wish them well as the season progresses.
