The Moascar Cup is the oldest, most prestigious and storied trophy in NZ 1st XV rugby, and dates back to the end of World War One. The Cup is played for under a challenge system, not unlike the Ranfurly Shield.

Nelson claim NPD Tasman Trophy Premiership. Growing up as a kid in Dunedin I remember watching and playing many a rugby game when the ground was a field of mud. After a few minutes teams were unrecognisable and the game became a slog fest between the forwards while the backs struggled with the rain, wind and mud. I was a back and in most of these games the back three were struggling with hyperthermia and just wanted a hot shower.

Semi-final results have set up an epic NPD Tasman Trophy Premiership Final between the two inner-city clubs, Nelson and Marist. The Final promises to be an enthralling end to what has been an entertaining and closely fought season played out by all Senior Clubs. In an exciting innovation, Central will host Wanderers in the first Championship Final that was contested by the middle four clubs on the ladder.

The sub-Union Finals weekend again illustrated to me how far as a rugby community we have come in the last five years. Last Saturday's rugby is the best part of my role - the start of the 2018 season for all those players under 18. It was fantastic to move around various grounds and see the incredible work done by club volunteers who ensure that the 6-year-olds in their first year of rugby to the newly caped 1st XV player is enjoying and having fun playing the best game available for all shapes and sizes.
