Semi-final results have set up an epic NPD Tasman Trophy Premiership Final between the two inner-city clubs, Nelson and Marist. The Final promises to be an enthralling end to what has been an entertaining and closely fought season played out by all Senior Clubs. In an exciting innovation, Central will host Wanderers in the first Championship Final that was contested by the middle four clubs on the ladder.

After 11 terrific, fiercely contested rounds of NPD Tasman Trophy matches, the semi-finals are upon us and to be played this Saturday at 3pm.  These matches are hosted by the top qualifying teams, Nelson and Marist.  Marist and Waimea Old Boys finished 2nd equal on the points table, but Marist take the home semi privilege as they beat Waimea OB in their last match (the Nelson Bays Div 1 semi-final).

The sub-Union Finals weekend again illustrated to me how far as a rugby community we have come in the last five years. The Finals were played in front of large crowds of passionate club rugby supporters at both games, decked out in their club colours. The passion and history of each club was clear to all.

Last Saturday's rugby is the best part of my role - the start of the 2018 season for all those players under 18. It was fantastic to move around various grounds and see the incredible work done by club volunteers who ensure that the 6-year-olds in their first year of rugby to the newly caped 1st XV player is enjoying and having fun playing the best game available for all shapes and sizes.

This Saturday, May 5 is the start of every JAB and Age Grade rugby player’s dream - the 2018 Rugby Season kicks off. Every young girl and boy will go to bed on Friday night wanting it to be the morning. I can remember many years ago going to Kettle Park in Dunedin as an eight year to learn the basic skills of rugby - catch & pass, tackle, serve & step and team work.
