NPD Tasman Trophy Round 7 Wrap

Marlborough’s Div 1 rugby sides bounced back in the latest round of NPD Tasman Trophy clashes, winning three of the five games played.

Central, East Coast won matches on their home grounds over Kahurangi and Wanderers, while Renwick pulled off a vital away victory in Nelson. Moutere lost at home to Stoke while Marist defeated Waitohi in Picton.

The sub-Union Finals weekend again illustrated to me how far as a rugby community we have come in the last five years. The Finals were played in front of large crowds of passionate club rugby supporters at both games, decked out in their club colours. The passion and history of each club was clear to all.

Last Friday was a sombre day as, on May 25, 2017, Bevan Moody passed away after playing a game of division one rugby his club Waitohi against Nelson the previous Saturday. While it was recorded as cardiac arrest that happened in the second half of the match, what I struggled with since that day is that a young man left home to play rugby and did not come home.
