The Tasman U19 finished sixth at the Jock Hobbs Memorial National Under 19 tournament in Taupo at the weekend.
Led by Head Coach, Dan Perrin along with his Assistant Coaches Tim Manawatu and Ti’i Paulo, Tasman made a spirited come back against North Harbour on day 1 before time caught up on them eventually going down 28-25. Josh MacPherson controlled the game well from fullback and Max Nalder sparked the big Mako forward pack into action in the second half.
In game two, Tasman played the attacking style of game we are used to seeing Mako teams play. Hawkes Bay were coming off a heavy defeat to eventual winners Bay of Plenty which made them tough opponents having something to prove. However, Tasman were gritty in holding on to win. Nigel Satherley was robust on defence and powerful with ball in hand. Sam Moli made some trade mark runs with ball in hand and Eden Beech was hungry and physical both in the breakdown and at scrum time.
In game three, the Mako men got off to a flying start against Auckland with Josh MacPherson running some good lines to dot down twice. By half time, Tasman were up 28-7 and on the front foot leading into the second half. However, the Auckland came out of the sheds ready to play and scrummed well to create opportunities on attack eventually winning 35-31.
It was a gut wrenching end to the tournament, but the players and management made massive strides since their first pre season hit out. Everyone left Taupo having learnt a lot as well as making their province proud.
Bay of Plenty won its first ever title after defeating Canterbury in a thrilling final 35-30.
