UC Championship

The Crusaders region secondary schools 1st XVs competition got underway last weekend, with all 3 teams – Marlborough Boys College, Nelson College & Waimea Combined Schools – recording first up away victories.

Nelson teams won all six crossover fixtures in round 2 of the NPD Tasman Trophy however Makos head coach Leon MacDonald has seen signs that the Marlborough teams are not too far off the pace and are hungry for success.

TRU chairman Ken Beams and I attended the NZ Rugby AGM last Thursday. Whilst it was pleasing to note that NZR is in a relatively strong financial position despite a loss in 2015, with healthy reserves, the chairman, Brent Impey, cautioned that greater investment was required to maintain the code’s preeminent position. “We face a revenue challenge if we hope to continue growing investment in the game” was how he put it.

Marlborough teams generally struggled to go the distance as the first round of NPD Tasman Trophy rugby crossover matches was played out across the top of the south on Friday and Saturday.

The real rugby season, in my opinion, is now underway with the NPD Tasman Trophy cross-over matches taking place. After three years of bedding the competition down, the premier club rugby competition in the Tasman region will have semi-finals and a Final in 2016.

Last weekend saw the completion of the first rounds of the respective Marlborough and Nelson Bays local competitions. The next phase of rugby moves into the NPD Tasman Trophy with cross-over matches where our 12 Division 1 clubs play each other once.

Division 1 rugby on both sides of the Whangamoa hills produced an upset that had the pundits scratching the heads. In the Motorworld Marlborough competition Harlequins, who the previous week had lost to newcomers East Coast, beat arch rivals and competition leaders Central.

The Tasman Rugby Union board announced another strong financial position at our Annual General Meeting in Nelson on Monday evening. For the sixth time in the past seven years the TRU were able to turn a profit.

Senior Competition Reviews

In The Car Company Nelson Bays Division 1 rugby on the weekend Wanderers comprehensively defeated Waimea Old Boys, Kahurangi out muscled Nelson in the second half, while Stoke and Marist fought out a 24 –all draw that kept the crowd entertained throughout.
