Seddon Shield Under 52 Kg Tournament - Day 4 results / Tournament Team

Golden Bay/Mot secure title

Consecutive titles is something that has eluded Golden Bay/Motueka in the 78 years that the Seddon Shield Districts Primary schools rugby tournament has been going but that has now changed as the team went through unbeaten this week in Westport. After winning the title last year in Hokitika, the Golden Bay/Mot side was impressive this week, securing the title with a win over Buller this morning. Their fate was decided yesterday however as they secured a 1 point victory over Nelson 8-7. It was a tournament defining match with the hopes of the two competing teams as well as Marlborough riding on the result. Marlborough were praying on rivals Nelson to win and it appeared their wish may have come to fruition when Nelson took a 7-3 halftime lead. A win for Nelson would have set up a three-way tie for the competition however Golden Bay/Mot put pay to that idea as they controlled much of the second half and a try midway through the half secured their win and a place at the top of the table. In the day’s first game, Marlborough proved too strong for the Buller side, running out winners 75-0. Buller started the match well controlling the ball for the first 5 minutes however their initial success was short lived as the red devils piled on the points with some fantastic long range tries. Nelson finished off their tournament this morning also with a large win over West Coast.
