World Smokefree Day

Thursday 31 May

World Smokefree Day, or World No-Tobacco Day, is a World Health Organisation initiative celebrated globally each year on 31 May. The day is about making good health choices and providing opportunities for people to quit smoking.

The WSFD theme also allows others to support and encourage their friends and whanau on their quit journey and provides an occasion to reinforce Smokefree health promotion messages to our community.

The theme and phrase coined nationally for Smokefree Day is “IT’S ABOUT WHĀNAU”.  Whānau is a driving force for many people wishing to protect others from the harms of second-hand smoke. This is a common cause for all people, cultures, communities and whānau.  For 2018, the decision is to focus on promoting smokefree environments through local businesses on the basis that second-hand smoke continues to impose health risks on non-smokers.
